History of the Department

The Department of Economics is one of the pioneer departments in the Faculty of Humanities, Management, and Social Sciences at the inception of Augustine University assigned to award Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics. The Department started in 2015/2016 academic session with total enrolment of thirteen (13) students.

Philosophy of the Department

The department is established to produce globally competitive economics graduates that will be relevant in the ever-changing local and global markets. This will be achieved through the inculcation of necessary intellectual and professional knowledge using practical oriented teaching methodologies that will enhance students’ ability in solving socio-economic problems.

  Objectives of the Programme

1. To deliver relevant instructional contents that will appeal to the cognitive and affective domains of the students in order to turnout graduates that will be locally and globally relevant in meeting the manpower demand in Business, Banking/Finance, industries and the government sectors.
2. To constantly engage in capacity building of the faculty members so that they will be competent in all areas of socio-economic knowledge dynamics and to be able to build the intellectual capacity of learners from diverse background.
3. To facilitate practical dissemination of research outcome of faculty members and students through seminars and constant exposure to econometric tools needed for modern socio-economic and policy-based research and to be able to contribute to national and international economic policy modeling and simulations.

Entry Requirement

1. As a university policy on admission, the prospective candidates seeking admission into Augustine University must not be less than 16 years of age by October of the Admission year.
2. In addition, the candidate must have had a minimum of five O'Level Credit passes at one or two sittings in West African SSCE/GCE/NECO or its acceptable equivalents which must include credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Economics, and at least two other subjects relevant in the social sciences, and scored 180 and above in the UTME Examination of the admission year.
3. Direct Entry candidates who satisfy the first two conditions and have Credit in relevant courses either in National Diploma (ND) or Nigerian Certificate in Education (NCE) can also be admitted.

 REQUIREMENT FOR GRADUATION

For any UTME student to be eligible for the award of B.Sc. (Hons) Economics, the student must pass at least 147 Units which must include all GST and CHF courses.		Eligibility for graduation for any Direct Entry student requires that the student must pass 90 Units which must include all GST and CHF courses.
