Augustine University’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Odetunde Charges Parents on Proper Child Upbringing for Value Reorientation The Vice-Chancellor of Augustine University, Ilara-Epe, Professor Christopher Odetunde has stressed the need for modern parents to instill values, morals, and principles that serve as a moral compass for children as they grow to ensure proper parenting for value reorientation and national consciousness. Professor Odetunde made the call at the golden anniversary of Yaba College of Technology held at Marriot Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos State on Saturday, 29th July, 2023. The Vice-Chancellor decried the high level of fundamental disconnect between the modern world and the way children were raised in the olden days, noting that ethical and moral values have deteriorated in the upcoming generation due to indecent exposure, and availability of smartphones among others. He added that, “today’s parents are expected to raise children who are perfectly ready for a world they know nothing about, because of this, children are increasingly getting diverted towards doing wrong things as parents also want to belong to the uncouth modern era. One of the biggest reasons for this is that children and even some parents now lack moral values because they are busy chasing money instead of bringing wholesome kids. These days, parents hardly find time to teach kids the fundamental moral values, younger kids now lack the wisdom to differentiate between what is right and what is wrong.”
In his word, “Fostering cultural and global awareness, working with synergy with our wives and husbands, managing screen time with our children, and providing consistent boundaries can create a nurturing, conducive and supportive environment for children to thrive.”
Addressing these gaps, Professor Odetunde advised parents and guardians to build their children’s self-esteem and enforce methods for navigating the treacherous path of modern life so as to become well-rounded, compassionate, good ambassadors and enviable citizens of the nation.
