Candida Adenike Afodu Lecture Series: Augustine University Advocates for Horticulture in National Development

Augustine University hosted the Candida Adenike Afodu 2nd Annual Lecture Series in Agriculture/Horticulture at its Convocation Hall on Wednesday, 27th November, 2024, emphasizing the critical role of horticulture in driving Nigeria’s economic and national development.

The event, endowed by Late Mrs. Frederica Abimbola Aina Omololu-Mulele, brought together academics, students, and industry professionals to discuss critical issues in agriculture and horticulture.

This year’s lecture, themed "Horticulture as a Major Income Earner for the Nigerian Economy: Prospects and Problems," was delivered by Dr. Vincent Umeh, a renowned expert from the National Horticultural Research Institute (NIHORT), Oyo State.

Dr. Umeh highlighted the immense potential of horticulture as a sustainable revenue generator for Nigeria.

He discussed how the sector could reduce dependency on oil exports and diversify the nation’s economy through the cultivation of fruits, vegetables, ornamental plants, and spices.

According to Dr. Umeh, "the right strategies and support, horticultural entrepreneurs can unlock the full potential of this dynamic industry, contributing to economic growth and food security in Nigeria."

He emphasized the role of technology, research, and policy support in unlocking these prospects.

However, he also outlined significant challenges, including poor infrastructure, limited access to financing for farmers, and inadequate storage facilities, which lead to post-harvest losses.

The event was graced by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Christopher Odetunde, who, in his welcome address, reiterated the University’s commitment to enhancing academic dialogue on key sectors that drive national development.

Other notable attendees included Members of the University Management team, invited guests, students and staff of the Institution.

The academic procession, which featured the Deans and Heads of Departments adorned in their ceremonial gowns, added a touch of solemnity and prestige to the event. Staff and students from the Department of Agriculture and Horticulture at Yaba College of Technology, Epe Campus, also participated, alongside Augustine University students and virtual attendees.

The lecture concluded with closing remarks by the Vice-Chancellor, who applauded Dr. Umeh for his insightful presentation and urged all stakeholders to take actionable steps in advancing horticulture in Nigeria.

This prestigious event was made possible by the generous endowment of Late Mrs. Frederica Abimbola Aina Omololu-Mulele, whose legacy continues to inspire advancements in agriculture and horticulture.
