The Faculty of Science held the Third Edition of the Faculty of Science Week between March 2 and 3, 2021. The two-day event which was themed “The Challenges Posed by COVID-19 Pandemic in the Context of Science and Technology” took place in the Convocation Hall of the University.
In her opening address, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor (Mrs.) Adesola Adetutu Ajayi said the Faculty combined ideas from the different departments under the Faculty to ensure a robust event, with exhibitions and presentations of papers from staff of the Faculty and students. She highlighted the disruption caused by the pandemic; from deaths of infected people to loss of jobs and the attendant increase in poverty rate and other effects. She added that research was the only way to measure the impact of the virus on Nigerians.
In his address titled “ Building Back Better? Agricultural R4D to Enable Post-Covid Recovery”, the Keynote Speaker, Professor Michael Abberton, from the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA)mentioned some of the impact of COVID-19 on agriculture as: less access to quality disease free planting materials; access to fields and field managements; availability and price
of inputs; value chain and market disruption; trade, supply chains, and wider economy . In addition to these, the Region is also facing the effect of climate change which has resulted in drought, flooding and increase in heat, which resulted in reduced yields, change in the distribution and frequency of pests and diseases along with soil degradation.
Professor Abberton stated that building back better means building more resilient food systems, adapting climate smart technologies, which will in turn improve crops and livestock output, create a value chain which would impact job creation.
The two-day event had an exhibition session where members of staff and students of the departments in the Faculty showcased their research work.
The new executives of the Faculty of Science Students Association, headed by the President, Mr. Daniel Ukaji were also inaugurated during the event.
