The Faculty of Science organized a seminar on international research grants titled “Developing the Skills to Prepare Application for and Win International Research Grants”.  The seminar held on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 with Professor Ojo Kolawole Adekunle as the Guest Lecturer. 
Professor Adekunle, a Professor of Nematology  and Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife is also the President of the Nigerian Society of Nematologists (NISON). 
Professor Adekunle who is a grants winner, gave important tips on how to search and apply for grants and what to do after winning grants.  In writing applications for grants he advised that researchers must ensure the result of the research was not one that was obvious or could be easily predicted and that the study addressed an issue of concern. 
He also said that proposals must sound, creative, innovative and cutting edge.  He added that researchers must confirm the impact factor of any journal they wish to publish the research in. 
Professor Adekunle noted that most granting bodies want applicants to possess a minimum of a Masters degree or equivalent, as this would increase the chances of winning grants. 
He advised applicants not to shortchange themselves when preparing their budgets as they must be generous within the limits set by the granting body. Refusal to do this would make the execution of the research a problematic one if the grant is awarded. 
He disclosed that trials must be repeated in most cases and there should be accurate data collection and analysis. He added that  the journal format and requirements must be followed strictly. 
Professor Adekunle encouraged applicants not to be discouraged if their initial attempts failed. 
He rounded his seminar by saying “Winning grants makes winning more grants easy, most especially for collaborations, where researchers look out for those who had previously won grants to be on their research team.”
In his closing remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Christopher Odetunde appreciated the guest speaker for doing justice to the topic. He expressed his gratitude for the impact the lecturer has made on participants at the seminar. 
The seminar was well attended by Faculty members from the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities, Management and Social Sciences.
